Decode Your Child’s Coloring Pages
Children wish to give color, and their work is a representation of their internal world. Most kids don’t think about or censor their artwork. For days gone by 40 years, I’ve used children’s Coloring Web pages as an important part of my pediatric practice. At each well-child visit beginning at four or five 5 years old, our nurse asks the child to “give color a picture of your loved ones doing something.” To simplify the procedure, each exam room has blank white paper over a clipboard with a black colored felt pen.

The family color helps me review development at a given instant, and it could tip me off to potential problems. An individual colouring is a snapshot of any child’s viewpoint — of her role in the family, her romantic relationship to other members of the family, and her self-esteem. It also may show strengths in the child and the family that are essential to recognize and validate. It can indicate cultural patterns that provide me a better understanding of some conducts or beliefs. I always ask the parents for their impression of the coloring site, because our talk can produce even more information that may not come up in any other case.
A major caveat here: Most of us want to find invisible meanings in Colouring Pages, but be cautious about overinterpreting. It’s not smart to read too much into your child’s sketches. Instead, use them as an possibility to talk with your son or daughter about what he or she has attracted. Then ask questions about them to enhance communication between you. Do your very best to avoid offering too many of your impressions. I purposely keep carefully the dialogue very open-ended: “Tell me about your coloring. Who are the people in the picture? What are they doing?” For examples of what you might be looking for with your own children, check out my examination of the kids’ Coloring Pages.

This first picture is a superb example of how artwork can be considered a springboard for chat. It was drawn by an individual of mine when she was 11. She acquired lived only with her mom since birth and she’s no siblings. On the surface, her physical health, schoolwork, and cultural development were just fine. But she made friends slowly and gradually and she was unusually cautious about leaving her mother to go to friends’ residences. She preferred to possess friends come to her house and play while her mom was nearby. I had been worried that their close relationship got truly in the way of her learning how to separate from her mommy, which is a necessary part of development.
I hadn’t had the opportunity to understand this point across at earlier office sessions. But with this colouring, I needed an opening. Just how they were put so closely mutually, and the actual fact that a short string linked the mom and girl, stood out if you ask me. AS I asked Mom, “What do you think about this picture?” she at first talked happily about her daughter’s colouring skills. But she accepted that she could see what I’d been trying to say about their romantic relationship. We could actually speak about it, and she kept the office determined to help her little girl (and herself ) learn how to split psychologically while preserving their adoring and close romance.

Coloring skills often get started to tell a tale in kindergarten. Although kids at this age have a tendency to use simple stick figures, you can sometimes opt for things up from cosmetic expressions, where family members are put, and what they’re doing. This second picture, attracted with a 5-year-old girl, can be an exemplory case of that. She drew her mom on the way left, followed by the family dog, her daddy, herself, and her 8-year-old sibling. The lady drew herself as larger than her parents — this typically displays good self-esteem. It’s worthy of noting that she located herself between her daddy and sibling: When children are between 4 and 6 years old, they develop a sense of the gender identity. As a part of this normal developmental process, young girls often get bodily and emotionally closer to their dad (boys this age tend to get closer to their mom), and the thoughts are temporary.
