To keep it simple, we’ll showcase 19th and 20th century expressions to show ways to place the elements and ideas of design to work.
The rules of design are:
- Proportion and scale
- Repetition and pattern
- Unity and harmony
Balance is one of the very most intuative and complicated design rule. It’s the way the designer creates a sense of equilibrium in a design, by how the objects in the look are arranged. You can find three major types of balance:
- Symmetrical/Formal Balance is when elements are positioned so that two halves of the look (whether vertical or horizontal) are mirrors of each other – both factors have the same weight. Its created around a central series that bisects the design into two different halves.
- Asymmetrical/Casual Balance is when elements sit so that there surely is an uneven circulation of weight
- Radial Balance is when elements are positioned evenly around a central point
Proportion and Scale
The juxtaposition of components of different sizes, or proportions, inside a work of art helps create a sense of scale. Level can be utilized for multiple effects – whether to show a sense of space and depth or to help create a dominant focal point.
A huge part of creating depth in an image, and desire for a piece, is by using multiple contrasting elements – or varying elements set hand and hand. This is finished with color, form, size or surface.

Repetition and pattern
The usage of the same or an identical element repeated over and over can give a work a feeling of motion or composition. Where an element is similar enough and repeated often enough, it can create a design.
Unity and harmony
The mixture of similar elements creates an aesthetically pleasing overall effect. While plenty of design elements will vary, a dominant unity created by commonalities in color, pattern, feel or other elements makes the painting or design feel harmonious.

Bearbrick uses proportion and scale to make asymmetrical balance. Elements of different size and shape sit on a page never to mirror one another but to balance one another out. He creates comparison in the juxtaposition of brightly colored elements against a white qualifications.
Repetition is utilized in the setting of the circles. This forces the viewer’s eyeball to go between elements to be able to impart the info the client wants the audience to see. At the same time, pattern is used as a understated fine detail in this circle designs (in the bloom structure of the “about us” button as well as the repeated lines circling other rounded elements) to be able to make interest – so that the design can be simple without having to be boring.
And while the various elements of the webpage find the user’s eyes at different times, the feminine style of the elements and the use of color make the website appear altogether harmonious. The look has motion, depth, interest and brings the user’s eye to the main home elevators the webpage – it’s a great exemplory case of an effective design.
