Decode YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER’S Coloring Pages
Children wish to give color, and their work is a reflection of their interior world. Most kids don’t think about or censor their artwork. For the past 40 years, I’ve used children’s Colouring Internet pages as an important part of my pediatric practice. At each well-child visit start at 4 or 5 5 yrs . old, our nurse asks the child to “give color an image of your family doing something.” To simplify the procedure, each exam room is equipped with blank white paper on a clipboard with a african american felt pen.

The family coloring helps me study development at confirmed instant, and it may word of advice me off to potential problems. An individual color is a snapshot of a child’s point of view — of her role in the family, her relationship to other family, and her self-esteem. In addition, it may show advantages in the child and the family that are essential to recognize and validate. It can indicate cultural habits that provide me a much better understanding of some habits or beliefs. I usually ask the parents for his or her impression of the colouring site, because our conversation can produce even more information that might not exactly come up in any other case.
A huge caveat here: We all want to find hidden meanings in Colouring Pages, but watch out for overinterpreting. It’s not smart to read too much into your child’s sketches. Instead, utilize them as an chance to talk with your child about what she or he has drawn. Then ask questions about them to improve communication between you. Do your very best to avoid giving too many of your own impressions. I purposely keep the dialog very open-ended: “Tell me about your coloring. Who are the people in the picture? What exactly are they doing?” For examples of what you might be looking for with your own children, check out my examination of the kids’ Coloring Web pages.

This first picture is a great example of how artwork can be considered a springboard for conversation. It was drawn by a patient of mine when she was 11. She experienced lived exclusively with her mother since beginning and she has no siblings. On the top, her physical health, schoolwork, and sociable development were just fine. But she made friends slowly but surely and she was unusually wary of leaving her mother to go to friends’ homes. She preferred to possess friends come to her house and play while her mom was nearby. I got worried that their close relationship got truly in the way of her learning how to separate from her mom, which is a necessary part of development.
I hadn’t been able to get this point across at prior office sessions. But with this color, I had formed an opening. The way they were positioned so closely along, and the fact that a brief string linked the mother and daughter, stood out if you ask me. WHENEVER I asked Mother, “What do you think about this picture?” she in the beginning talked proudly about her daughter’s colouring skills. But then she accepted that she could see what I’d been trying to state about their relationship. We could actually discuss it, and she left the office determined to help her princess (and herself ) discover ways to isolate psychologically while preserving their loving and close romantic relationship.

Colouring skills often start to tell a tale in kindergarten. Although kids at this age tend to use simple keep figures, you will often decide on things up from facial expressions, where family are placed, and what they’re doing. This second picture, drawn by the 5-year-old girl, can be an exemplory case of that. She drew her mother on the far left, accompanied by the family dog, her daddy, herself, and her 8-year-old brother. The girl drew herself as larger than her parents — this typically demonstrates good self-esteem. It’s worthwhile noting that she positioned herself between her father and brother: When children are between 4 and 6 years old, they develop a sense of the gender identity. As a part of this normal developmental process, young girls often get bodily and emotionally closer to their dad (children this age have a tendency to get closer to their mom), and the feelings are temporary.
