Decode YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER’S Coloring Pages
Children wish to give color, and their work is a representation of their inner world. Most kids don’t believe about or censor their artwork. For the past 40 years, I’ve used children’s Coloring Internet pages as an important part of my pediatric practice. At each well-child visit beginning at four or five 5 years of age, our nurse asks the child to “give color a picture of your loved ones doing something.” To simplify the procedure, each exam room is equipped with blank white newspaper over a clipboard with a black felt pen.

The family colouring helps me survey development at confirmed instant, and it could word of advice me off to potential problems. An individual colouring is a snapshot of a child’s point of view — of her role in the family, her romance to other members of the family, and her self-esteem. It also may show advantages in the child and the family that are essential to recognize and validate. It could indicate cultural patterns that provide me a better knowledge of some manners or beliefs. I usually ask the parents because of their impression of the color webpage, because our dialog can produce even more information that might not exactly come up otherwise.
A major caveat here: We all want to find concealed meanings in Color Pages, but be cautious about overinterpreting. It isn’t smart to read too much into your child’s sketches. Instead, use them as an opportunity to talk with your son or daughter about what she or he has attracted. Then ask questions about them to enhance communication between you. Do your best to avoid providing too many of your impressions. I purposely keep carefully the conversation very open-ended: “Tell me about your coloring. Who will be the people in the picture? What are they doing?” For types of what you might be looking for with your personal children, check out my evaluation of the kids’ Coloring Web pages.

This first picture is a superb exemplory case of how artwork can be a springboard for talk. It was drawn by a patient of mine when she was 11. She possessed lived by themselves with her mom since birth and she’s no siblings. On the top, her physical health, schoolwork, and sociable development were just fine. But she made friends slowly but surely and she was unusually wary of leaving her mom to visit friends’ homes. She preferred to acquire friends come to her house and play while her mother was nearby. I was worried that their close bond got truly in the way of her learning how to separate from her mother, which is a necessary part of development.
I hadn’t had the opportunity to get this point across at prior office visits. But with this coloring, I needed an opening. The way they were located so closely collectively, and the fact that a brief string connected the mother and princess, stood out if you ask me. AFTER I asked Mommy, “What do you consider relating to this picture?” she at first talked happily about her daughter’s coloring skills. But then she accepted that she could see what I’d been trying to say about their romantic relationship. We were able to talk about it, and she remaining the office motivated to help her daughter (and herself ) learn how to isolate psychologically while maintaining their caring and close marriage.

Coloring skills often begin to tell a story in kindergarten. Although kids as of this age have a tendency to use simple keep figures, you can sometimes pick things up from cosmetic expressions, where family are put, and what they’re doing. This second picture, attracted with a 5-year-old girl, is an exemplory case of that. She drew her mother on the much left, accompanied by the family dog, her dad, herself, and her 8-year-old brother. The lady drew herself as bigger than her parents — this typically displays good self-esteem. It’s worthy of noting that she put herself between her daddy and brother: When children are between 4 and 6 years old, they create a sense of the gender identity. As part of this normal developmental process, young girls often get physically and emotionally closer to their father (boys this age tend to get nearer to their mother), and the emotions are temporary.
