Decode Your Child’s Coloring Pages
Children want to give color, and their work is a representation of their interior world. Most kids don’t believe about or censor their artwork. For days gone by 40 years, I’ve used children’s Coloring Web pages as an important part of my pediatric practice. At each well-child visit beginning at 4 or 5 5 yrs . old, our nurse asks the child to “give color an image of your family doing something.” To simplify the procedure, each exam room is equipped with blank white newspaper on the clipboard with a dark felt pen.

The family color helps me study development at confirmed instant, and it could word of advice me off to potential problems. An individual color is a snapshot of any child’s viewpoint — of her role in the family, her romance to other members of the family, and her self-esteem. It also may show advantages in the kid and the family that are essential to recognize and validate. It can indicate cultural patterns that give me a much better knowledge of some conducts or beliefs. I always ask the parents because of their impression of the colouring site, because our discussion can yield even more info that may not come up often.
An enormous caveat here: Most of us want to find invisible meanings in Colouring Pages, but be cautious about overinterpreting. It’s not a good idea to read too much into your son or daughter’s sketches. Instead, use them as an opportunity to talk with your child about what she or he has drawn. Then ask questions about them to enhance communication between you. Do your very best to avoid providing too many of your impressions. I purposely keep carefully the dialog very open-ended: “Tell me about your coloring. Who are the people in the picture? What are they doing?” For types of what you may be looking for with your own children, check out my examination of these kids’ Coloring Pages.

This first picture is a great example of how artwork can be considered a springboard for discussion. It was attracted by a patient of mine when she was 11. She acquired lived only with her mother since delivery and she has no siblings. On the surface, her physical health, schoolwork, and social development were just fine. But she made friends slowly and she was unusually wary of leaving her mother to visit friends’ residences. She preferred to have friends come to her house and play while her mom was nearby. I got worried that their close relationship got in the way of her learning how to separate from her mother, which is a necessary part of development.
I hadn’t had the opportunity to understand this point across at past office appointments. But with this coloring, I had formed an opening. Just how they were placed so closely collectively, and the actual fact that a brief string connected the mom and little girl, stood out if you ask me. AFTER I asked Mother, “What do you consider concerning this picture?” she primarily talked proudly about her daughter’s coloring skills. But then she admitted that she could see what I’d been striving to say about their relationship. We could actually speak about it, and she still left the office encouraged to help her daughter (and herself ) discover ways to split psychologically while keeping their loving and close romance.

Coloring skills often begin to tell a story in kindergarten. Although kids at this age tend to use simple stay figures, you will often decide on things up from facial expressions, where family are put, and what they’re doing. This second picture, drawn by a 5-year-old girl, can be an example of that. She drew her mother on the significantly left, accompanied by the family dog, her dad, herself, and her 8-year-old brother. The lady drew herself as larger than her parents — this typically demonstrates good self-esteem. It’s worthwhile noting that she placed herself between her father and brother: When children are between 4 and 6 years old, they develop a sense of the gender identity. As part of this normal developmental process, young girls often get physically and emotionally closer to their dad (young boys this age have a tendency to get nearer to their mother), and the feelings are temporary.
