Decode Your Child’s Coloring Pages
Children like to give color, and their work is a representation of their internal world. Most kids don’t think about or censor their artwork. For the past 40 years, I’ve used children’s Colouring Webpages as an important part of my pediatric practice. At each well-child visit start at 4 or 5 5 yrs . old, our nurse asks the kid to “give color an image of your family doing something.” To simplify the process, each exam room is equipped with blank white paper on the clipboard with a black colored felt pen.

The family color helps me review development at a given moment in time, and it may hint me off to potential problems. A single coloring is a snapshot of any child’s point of view — of her role in the family, her romance to other family members, and her self-esteem. In addition, it may show strengths in the child and the family that are important to recognize and validate. It can indicate cultural patterns that give me an improved knowledge of some manners or beliefs. I usually ask the parents for his or her impression of the coloring web page, because our dialogue can deliver even more information that might not exactly come up normally.
An enormous caveat here: Most of us want to find concealed meanings in Colouring Pages, but be cautious about overinterpreting. It’s not smart to read too much into your child’s sketches. Instead, use them as an chance to talk with your child about what he or she has attracted. Then ask questions about them to improve communication between you. Do your best to avoid presenting too many of your impressions. I purposely keep carefully the conversation very open-ended: “Tell me about your color. Who are the people in the picture? What are they doing?” For types of what you might be looking for with your personal children, check out my evaluation of the kids’ Coloring Webpages.

This first picture is a great exemplory case of how artwork can be a springboard for conversation. It was attracted by a patient of mine when she was 11. She acquired lived together with her mom since labor and birth and she’s no siblings. On the top, her physical health, schoolwork, and cultural development were just fine. But she made friends gradually and she was unusually wary of leaving her mother to visit friends’ homes. She preferred to obtain friends come to her house and play while her mother was nearby. I was concerned that their close relationship got truly in the way of her learning how to split up from her mom, which really is a necessary part of development.
I hadn’t been able to get this point across at past office goes to. But with this coloring, I had developed an opening. The way they were put so closely along, and the actual fact that a short string linked the mother and daughter, stood out to me. AS I asked Mommy, “What do you think about this picture?” she initially talked happily about her daughter’s colouring skills. But she accepted that she could see what I’d been striving to state about their marriage. We could actually discuss it, and she left the office encouraged to help her daughter (and herself ) learn how to isolate psychologically while preserving their loving and close romantic relationship.

Coloring skills often begin to tell a tale in kindergarten. Although kids at this age tend to use simple stay figures, you will often decide on things up from facial expressions, where family are placed, and what they’re doing. This second picture, attracted with a 5-year-old girl, can be an example of that. She drew her mother on the considerably left, followed by the family dog, her dad, herself, and her 8-year-old sibling. The girl drew herself as larger than her parents — this typically demonstrates good self-esteem. It’s well worth noting that she placed herself between her father and brother: When children are between 4 and 6 years old, they develop a sense with their gender identity. As a part of this normal developmental process, girls often get physically and emotionally closer to their dad (males this age have a tendency to get nearer to their mom), and the thoughts are temporary.
